A baby’s skin is up to five times thinner than an adult’s and produces virtually no melanin until the age of three. As a result, it burns within minutes and even the slightest exposure leaves a lasting mark. Our baby UV-protective suits cover the whole body with UPF 80-certified SHIRO fabric — protection that doesn’t smear, run into the eyes or wash off in water.
Extra-flat flatlock stitching, like a second skin
Babies’ skin cannot tolerate topstitching, labels or low-quality synthetic materials. Our swimsuits are made with flatlock stitching (extra-flat) — no raised seams on the inside — and are OEKO-TEX certified, free from harmful substances. The recycled Italian fabric feels like a second skin: stretchy, breathable and quick-drying to prevent chills after swimming.
A full-body wetsuit, bare hands and feet
The suit covers the entire torso, back, arms and legs — all the areas at risk for a baby. Hands and feet remain bare so the child can feel the sand, water and ground. The nappy area remains accessible thanks to a design tailored for parents. The head and face should be protected with a wide-brimmed hat and mineral sun cream applied only to exposed areas.
Why UPF 80 (and not UPF 50+) for a baby
For adults, UPF 50+ is sufficient (97% of UV rays blocked). For a baby whose skin does not yet have its natural defences, we recommend UPF 80 — blocking up to 99% of UV rays. Our baby swimsuits use SHIRO fabric, certified to UV Standard 801 (the most stringent German protocol: wet fabric, stretched, after 80 washes). The entire UVEA baby range is UPF 80 by default, without exception.
A photochromic zip changes colour in the sun
All UVEA baby swimsuits feature a photochromic zip: a photochromic slider that changes from pale pink to dark purple as UV intensity rises. It serves as both an immediate visual indicator for parents — ‘it’s time to head back into the shade’ — and a playful detail that helps children become aware of light. At what age can you start dressing your baby in UV-protective clothing?
As soon as your baby is exposed to the sun — their skin is particularly delicate before the age of 3. Dermatologists recommend avoiding direct exposure before 6 months, but for unavoidable outdoor activities (walks, the beach, the garden), a UPF 80 UV-protective onesie offers the safest protection. It provides full coverage, doesn’t run into the eyes and doesn’t wash off in water.
Why choose UPF 80 rather than UPF 50+ for a baby?
A baby’s skin does not yet have its natural defences against UV rays: it is thinner, more permeable, and produces very little melanin. UPF 80 blocks up to 99% of UV rays (compared to 97% for UPF 50+) and this level of protection is maintained even when the fabric is wet, stretched, or after 80 washes. This is the extra margin of safety we recommend for a baby.
Can the fabric irritate a baby’s sensitive skin?
No. The fabric is OEKO-TEX certified (free from harmful substances) and the seams are extra-flat (flatlock), with no raised edges or topstitching that could rub. There are no scratchy labels — everything is printed directly onto the fabric. A gentleness that the most hypersensitive skin knows how to recognise.
Do you still need to use sun cream?
Yes, but only on exposed areas: face, hands, feet and the back of the neck. For a baby, opt for a mineral-based cream (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) — gentler on the skin, free from endocrine disruptors, and coral-friendly. A wide-brimmed hat remains essential. A wetsuit eliminates the need for sun cream on 90% of the body, which is a huge relief.
Is the wetsuit suitable for the pool and the sea?
Yes. The fabric is designed to withstand chlorine, salt and sun cream. A quick rinse with fresh water after each swim is enough to keep the fabric in good condition. The wetsuit dries in a matter of minutes — no need to worry about catching a chill after a swim in the sea.
How long does the wetsuit last?
UV protection is maintained for 80 washes (UV Extra Inside fabric, integrated into the material). In practical terms, a UVEA baby suit lasts for two to three full seasons before the child outgrows it — and can then be passed on to the next child. Made in Europe (Italy and Bulgaria), it is designed to last.
How to choose the right size?
The baby range starts at 9–12 months. Measure your child (chest circumference, height) and consult the UVEA size guide on each product page — it is given in ages and centimetres. The suit should fit snugly (like a second skin) to provide proper protection; the fabric is stretchy and will accommodate growth over a few months. If you’re unsure between two sizes, choose the larger one.
